Rage, along with an unsettled feeling, boiled in

Christian. Was he or was he not Mael’s son? For the

majority of his life, he’d had certain expectations of his

father. They’d never changed in all these years. As

Mael’s son, he was entitled to unlimited access to his

father for whatever he might need. It had always been

that way. Mael had never denied him anything.

It wasn’t like Mael had denied him this time, either,

but Christian had sensed his father was at the very edge

of his limits. Something was pushing Mael to shield

himself. Christian threw himself on the bed and stared

out the huge double doors leading to an enclosed garden.

He'd returned to his grandfather's estate a week ago, but

Nigel had yet to summon him. There was no one else for

him to talk to but his grandfather. He’d had more than

enough time to contemplate everything and what it

meant.

Christian realized it had to do with him feeding from

Mael. While he understood there would be no sexual

relationship between them, was it to include feeding as

well? He’d sensed Mael’s reluctance to push Cian, but

he could also feel Mael didn’t want to deny him. It had

put Mael in enough of a quandary that Christian had

decided to play least in sight.

He hadn’t spoken to Nigel since the man had drugged

him and put him in Mael’s bed. The moment he’d

woken up, he’d realized exactly who was behind it and

why, but it wouldn’t have done any good to say

anything to Nigel. At the time, part of him had been

disappointed the ploy hadn’t worked.

Never in his existence had he questioned his place

with Mael. It had always been understood, even through

the times they didn’t get along well. Nigel had become

the buffer between the two of them at their worst, and

Mael had been in the background until needed. Now

things had changed, and Christian had no clue how to

adapt or what to make of it. Cian took precedence with

Mael, which, to a degree, Christian understood and

accepted. However, with the feeding incident, things

weren’t okay anymore. Cian might have calmed, but

Christian wasn’t sure the angel would stay calm if he

walked into the same situation again.

A sip of the bottled blood in his hand only reinforced

Christian's discontent. He usually didn’t mind it, but he

looked forward to the taste of Mael’s blood whenever he

could get it. He’d been holed up at his grandfather’s

stronghold for almost a week, and it was all he wanted.

The thought of Mael no longer there for him disturbed

Christian more than he cared to admit.

"Attend to me in fifteen minutes. My study."

Christian jumped off the bed to get ready. There was

a knock at the door, and a second later, his valet, Simon,

entered. In silence, Simon took the bottle from

Christian, set it down, then opened the wardrobe to

choose Christian’s outfit.

With quick efficiency, Simon had him dressed and

his hair coiffed in less than the allotted time. All

Christian had to do was stand still and move at the

appropriate moment. Before the bell sounded the half

hour, Christian stood at the door of his grandfather’s

study.
